Bought the Dream Home—Now They’re Not So Sure

Buying a home should be one of life’s most exciting milestones, but for a surprising number of first-time buyers, the excitement fades fast. A new survey by Clever Real Estate reveals that nearly one in three people who purchased a home for the first time in 2023 now regret it. And when you dig into the reasons, it’s easy to understand why.

Many of these buyers rushed into the market, trying to secure a home before prices or interest rates climbed higher. But in the process, more than half admitted they settled for a home that wasn’t ideal. Some bought in neighborhoods they weren’t thrilled with, others compromised on size or condition, and a few even waived inspections—choices that felt necessary in the heat of competition but now weigh heavily in hindsight.

Affordability played a big role in this story too. With home prices still high and mortgage rates rising, most buyers couldn’t get everything on their wish list. Some ended up spending more than planned just to beat other offers, while others underestimated the true costs of ownership—like repairs, taxes, and utility bills. A lot of folks entered homeownership thinking it would be cheaper than renting, but that math hasn’t always worked out.

Another challenge? The learning curve. About 80% of first-time buyers said the process was more stressful than expected. Many felt underprepared, unsure of what questions to ask or what steps to take. And while real estate agents are meant to help, not everyone felt they had the right guidance. Looking back, nearly half said they wish they’d waited longer, and a third admitted they didn’t really know what they were doing when they made the purchase.

In summary, I’d say it’s a classic case of “act now, think later.” Buying your first home in a tough market is never easy, but this survey shows how quickly optimism can turn into buyer’s remorse. If there’s one takeaway, it’s that being patient, informed, and brutally honest about what you can afford goes a long way. Also, find a Realtor thats authentically interested in supporting your best interests vs just making a sale (wink wink).
