HUD Cuts Housing Rule to Reduce Bureaucracy

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has eliminated an Obama-era housing rule, aiming to simplify local housing decisions. The 2021 Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) rule required local governments receiving HUD funds to complete extensive reports on housing disparities and policies.

HUD says the rule added unnecessary bureaucracy, making housing projects more expensive and slowing down development. By removing it, local and state governments regain control over zoning and housing plans without federal oversight.

Supporters of the rollback argue that local leaders understand their communities better than Washington officials and that cutting paperwork will help speed up affordable housing projects. Critics worry that removing federal oversight could lead to housing discrimination and reduced access to fair housing.

With home prices high and housing shortages growing, HUD hopes that fewer regulations will encourage faster and cheaper home development.
